1/2 cup red-wine vinegar
1/3 cup light sesame or peanut oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons sesame seeds
12 pearl onions, peeled with root attached
2 cups assorted raw vegetables, including red or green bell pepper chunks, cucumber chunks, jicama chunks, zucchini chunks, large mushroom caps, cherry tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste

1. In a large bowl, combine red-wine vinegar, oil, soy sauce, garlic, and sesame seeds. Add pearl onions and desired vegetable pieces to marinade. Let stand at room temperature about 20 minutes, or refrigerate for several hours.
2. Preheat broiler. Drain off marinade, reserving for basting sauce. Alternate vegetable pieces with pearl onions, beginning and ending with vegetables, using 3 onions and 5 vegetables per skewer. Season skewers with salt and pepper to taste. Place skewers on broiler pan, broil until golden brown, basting frequently with reserved marinade, about 4 minutes per side.

If using wooden skewers, soak in water for about 20 minutes before adding the vegetables to avoid flameups under the broiler. Serve as a side dish to grilled chicken or fish, or serve 2 skewers per person for a vegetarian main course.
