3 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
5 tablespoons sesame seeds, divided
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 1/3 cups milk

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a large baking sheet.
2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, 3 tablespoons sesame seeds, the baking powder and salt. Cut in butter and shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Add milk and stir until all the dry ingredients have been moistened.
3. Pat dough out on a floured surface to make a 9- by 6-inch rectangle. Cut into six 3-inch squares; cut each square diagonally in half. Place scones on greased baking sheet about 1-inch apart. Brush tops with water and sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons sesame seeds.
4. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until tops are golden brown and scones sound hollow when gently tapped. Serve warm.

For added flavor, you can toss 1/4 cup dried currants, raisins, sour cherries or blueberries with the flour before making these scones.
